Message from the President

Lorna Kibbey
Ten years ago, I went to my first local ATD meeting. I knew little about ATD and less about the people in the room. I went because I am fascinated with training and speaking and when I heard there was a local group of people who shared my passion, I had to check it out. I wanted to find ways to improve my skills, to learn from others, and maybe make a few friends along the way.

So, ten years later, I’ve served on the local Board for 9.5 years – served almost every Board position including President for a total of 4 years. I served on the ATD National Advisors Council for 3 years. I’ve helped start our first SIG (Special Interest Group) which is strong and now a much-valued part of my personal membership. I’ve seen our chapter struggle and I’ve seen our chapter excel. I have found ways to improve my skills, to learn from others, and friends? This is truly one of the best benefits of ATD. I have friends from coast-to-coast and beyond – all through ATD. I think it is safe to say, I’m all in.

As I prepare for my role on our 2018 Board – Immediate Past-President (best position of all!?) – I am more excited than ever. Our new President, Rebecca Ruding, is ready for the job and comes in with new ideas and enthusiasm! In fact, our 2018 Board is strong and ready. You will meet them December 6 at our last event in 2017.

Many thank-yous are owed – to all the members of the 2017 Board who have worked so hard on our behalf. To all the members of our Chapter – who support the local effort and invest in taking care of our profession. To my family for supporting the time away and all that goes in to the work I’ve done with ATD. And to everyone one of you who at some time, in some way that may have seemed small, have given me the inspiration I need. I will do my best to continue to give back.

Happy Holidays – Happy New Year!

Your SW FL ATD President,
Lorna Kibbey

In Case You Missed It (ICYMI)

How to Make Networking an Art, not an Accident

James works for an organization and is currently in the Human Resources department.  He has come to the realization that he would really like to transfer to the Talent Development team. He knows, however, that he needs to become moreknownto the hiring managers within the Talent Development team.  He has met a few people in that department, but wonders, “What’s a good next step to show them my character and competence? What can I do and say that will make them think of me when there’s an opening?”

Have you ever found yourself in this type of situation?  If so, you have just identified a need for networking skills!

Participants in our December Master Class,How to Make Networking an Art not an Accident, learned how to follow up and build relationships for long-term, mutual benefit.  The key to this issue lies in knowing how to gauge the stage of trust you’ve earned with each of your important contacts. There are appropriate - and inappropriate - things to do and say at each stage of the relationship-building process. These activities are the foundation for becoming an intentional relationship builder.

As an intentional relationship builder, you are aware of the kinds of things you’d like to teach your contacts in each encounter. The following series of questions highlight the notion that it often takes six or eight encounters with someone before he or she knows who you are, has learned what you do, and has the evidence they need to begin to trust you.

Read more online, including the “Rate Your Relationships” Questionnaire.

Special Interest Group Update: Independent Training and Speaking Professionals

Our ATD Special Interest Group (SIG) for independents is going strong – and getting stronger. In SW Florida, this SIG is known as Seriously Independent Gurus. This is a great forum for discussing your ideas, issues, and thoughts on how to do business as an independent here in SW Florida. If you would enjoy discussing a wide array of topics with a wide array of professionals, please join us. All who attend agree that we very much enjoy the richness of our discussions and appreciate the support provided to one another.

We meet monthly with our next meeting being on December 13th at 8 AM at First Watch in Gulf Cosat Town Center. There is no cost for attending other than what you choose to spend on breakfast! All are welcome.

Questions? Please contact Lorna Kibbey at LKibbey@LKibbey.com.

This SIG (Special Interest Group) is for training and speaking professionals who are independents. Click here to learn more about the Special Interest Group.
