Message from the President

Lorna Kibbey
Whoa! I feel like we got a little bit “blown off track!” Our September event was cancelled along with our Board Retreat, due to Hurricane Irma. We sincerely hope you are all doing well and recovering from the storm.  It will certainly take a while to return to “normal.” I know you join me in thoughts and prayers for all recovering from the recent events of storms, fires, earthquakes, and just bad stuff.

One thing I know about the storm in SW FL, is that we all have a story to tell. I went ten days without power – rough, and I just got internet back about 48 hours ago. About seven days in, our camp stove quit working – I was so happy (don’t tell my husband). Cooking on a camping stove was fun in the woods for two nights – not so much fun with the circumstances at hand.

The good news is that we are trainers and speakers with exceptional talent for telling stories and now we have some great material, right? I’m thinking of writing a keynote called: “Power to the People!” and telling my hurricane tales. We will find a way to use what we learned and what we experienced to strengthen the skills of others! Amazing.

ATD SW FL is back on track. Our next monthly event is on October 18, 2017 and features Ammie Black speaking to us about employee engagement and skills gaps. On November 8, we will feature Vern Schellenger in the Master Class: “How to Make Networking an Art, not an Accident.” Then on December 6, we will end the year with a big celebration of Employee Learning Week.

Please remember that what we have just experienced takes a toll – physically and mentally. Take care of yourself and look for good distractions – distractions that take your mind off every day and still prove to be useful and meaningful, distractions that relieve stress, distractions that allow you to surround yourself with people who care. Hmmm, could be that ATD SW FL fits that description!

ATD is just what we need right now. See you October 18!

Your SW FL ATD President,
Lorna Kibbey

Can We Teach People to Be More Likeable?
by Lynne Waymon

In the movie, “The Imitation Game,” English scientists are charged with breaking the secret Nazi message code in World War II – thereby saving thousands of lives and ending the war. But, just as with the people you provide training for, there are people challenges, as well as technical hurdles to overcome. The leader, Dr. Alan Turing, is difficult, moody, rude, and hard to like. One team member tells him that the others won’t help him with this monumental task unless he is more likeable. The next scene shows Turning telling a joke and offering an apple to each team member. Even these awkward efforts bring about a positive shift in how the team members feel about Turing and their willingness to listen to his ideas.

More than sixty years later, The Harvard Business Review confirmed what Turing’s team member already knew. In a study called “Competent Jerks, Lovable Fools,” Casciaro & Lobo found that when people are asked whether they’d choose to work with someone who’s competent or someone who’s likeable, they say they’d choose the competent colleague. But, in actual real life situations, when it comes to choosing people to work with, likeability, not competence, is what attracts. When people consider who to turn to, who to ask for help, and who to trust, likeability wins.

So what is likeability? It’s not an inborn trait enjoyed by some special few. Likeability...

Special Interest Group Update: Independent Training and Speaking Professionals

Our ATD Special Interest Group (SIG) for independents is going strong – and getting stronger. In SW Florida, this SIG is known as Seriously Independent Gurus. This is a great forum for discussing your ideas, issues, and thoughts on how to do business as an independent here in SW Florida. If you would enjoy discussing a wide array of topics with a wide array of professionals, please join us. All who attend agree that we very much enjoy the richness of our discussions and appreciate the support provided to one another.

We meet monthly with our next meeting being on October 11th at 8 AM at First Watch in Gulf Cosat Town Center. There is no cost for attending other than what you choose to spend on breakfast! All are welcome.

Questions? Please contact Lorna Kibbey at LKibbey@LKibbey.com.

This SIG (Special Interest Group) is for training and speaking professionals who are independents. Click here to learn more about the Special Interest Group.
